Count Me Out of Bridge Cheering Section

The Bob Kerrey Bridge represents the hardest thing a fiscal conservative faces.

Why should taxpayers throughout America buy an adornment to downtown Omaha?

Hey, our tax dollars are spent on similar projects in other states. Let's get some for ourselves. And look how beautiful it is! Especially when it's lighted! Don't be a wet blanket. This is vision. This is boldness. This is 21st century progressivism.

This is the pork mentality that is killing the state and the country fiscally. Reaching into other people's pockets to fund government services is distasteful, but necessary for our system to function. Reaching into people's pockets to fund feel-good show projects is an abomination.

Yesterday's almost suicide jump points out the obvious major design flaw of the bridge...the railing/fence is too low and easy to climb. The bridge isn't open yet and Omaha taxpayers were called upon to send police, fire and river rescue units to the bridge to get some guy off the rail before he jumped. How long is it going to be before we're asked to spend another couple of million to revise the railings to prevent jumpers and people from throwing large objects onto boats below??? Plus we're obligated for utilities and maintenance for decades to come. If it's main value is as postcard from Omaha material, I maintain Photoshop was a much better alternative. The Bob Kerry bridge is going to be the gift that keeps on giving...taxpayers another unnecessary bite at their incomes.
