A typical unit of cord blood (100 to 150 ml) has up to 15 million stem cells. When you consider that there are 4 million births in the U.S. every year, that billions of stem cells that could be banked annually.

People are being cured with stem cells from cord blood, but there is need for more stem cells if such cures are to available to all sectors of society. There is especially a need for cord blood donations from racial and ethnic minorities.

Please help spread the word.

Why don't you get some proposed legislation ready for the next session of the legislature to allow private companies to buy cord blood by contracting with hospitals to offer prospective labor & delivery patients some kind of "rebate" against delivery costs if they choose not to pay to bank the cord blood for their own child's potential future use using some of the private services already offering such services??? Make dealing with cord blood part of the patient information/consent process. This could spawn a new industry here in Nebraska that could easily spread across the nation while supporting "ethical research" objectives. Give the L&D patients 4 options: (1) do nothing; (2) donate; (3) bank for their own child; or (4) sell it for research.
