March Madness: Will Omaha Launch Another Champ?

March Madness, the NCAA basketball tournament, comes to Omaha this week.

As a youngster in 1977 I worked courtside at the scorer’s table for first-round NCAA tournament games at the Civic Auditorium, where Marquette, coached by the legendary Al McGuire, began its march toward a national championship. This week I’ll be rooting for perennial power and neighbor-state favorite Kansas, the #1 seed in the Midwest.

But could Portland State make history and become the first 16th seed to upset a #1 seed? Upsets and Cinderella stories are what put the madness in March Madness.

We have teams from all over the country coming to Omaha. Let’s show ’em a good time. We know this drill. We do it every year for the College World Series.

Wouldn’t it be great if Omaha could become a regular site for the NCAA basketball tournament? Here’s hoping all goes well this week at the Qwest Center.
