One More Look at 9/11

The best thing about 9/11 was that it was a populist triumph.

Tens of thousands of people could have been killed. They weren't because of the response of frontline, everyday people such as firefighters, security consultants in the World Trade Center, and non-trained citizens who acted heroically.

Our leadership failed us. Mayor Giuliani, Governor Pataki, President Bush -- they didn't do anything meaningful. The elite class of experts in government didn't accomplish anything. On United Flight 93 and at Ground Zero, the people who responded effectively to the 9/11 attack were rank-and-file citizens.

And the people have responded over time in ways that can't be orchestrated by government. From firefighters rigging up the first flag at Ground Zero to the public safety professionals from all over the country who came to Ground Zero to the various memorials at Ground Zero and the continued (I believe) support of the majority of Americans for the decision to fight the war on terror in the land of the terrorists instead of America and take preventive measures against people with suspected of contact withy terrorists.
